My Detox Routine

Summer 2024 has sadly come to an end which means it’s time to wash away my alcohol and late night McDonald’s filled sins to prepare for the next season.

I love a good detox because it feels like a new beginning. A fresh start. It’s a routine that I try to do at least 4 times a year (at the start or end of every quarter) to keep my body functioning at its best. It’s quite common in the Caribbean to drink senna leaf tea (a natural laxative) but don’t worry, my tips won’t have you clinging to the toilet.

IT’S GOT TO GO

What daily habits need to change? Are you smoking too much? Eating too much sweets or fried food? Look at the things that don’t make you feel good or are impacting you negatively and make the conscious choice not to consume it for the next 7 days. The first 3 days will be hardest but once you get over that first hurdle, the rest will be a breeze.

SWEAT IT OUT

I love a good sweat sesh at the gym. Doing cardio or going to the steam room/sauna is a great way to clear out the toxins from your body. If you don’t have a gym membership, go for a 20-30 minute jog/power walk daily, drink at least 2 litres of water and give yourself a lymphatic massage in the shower.

INTERMITTENT FASTING

It is not necessary to eat at every minute of the day. I know I am guilty of snacking when I am bored or working from home, but all of that contributes to poor gut health and fluctuating energy levels. To keep my body functioning properly, I have a cup of herbal tea or hot lemon water at 10pm every night and will break my fast at 10am the next day with a spoon of sea moss or fruit. I usually have a glass of water by my bedside that I’ll drink as soon as I wake up but I don’t consume caffeine and solid food until after noon.

MORE GREENS PLEASE

Have you tried drinking your greens? It can been difficult to consume your 5 day which is why I usually opt for a juice or smoothie. Leafy greens like spinach, kale and bok choy are a great source of fibre while broccoli is known to be good for your heart. Drinking or eating raw celery is also a fab antioxidant and gut cleanser.

REST

You’ve been running the streets all summer, it’s time to relax now. You might need to switch up your daily routines i.e. go to bed earlier, but the main thing is to allow yourself to slow down. Reduce screen time, reduce alcohol intake, reduce giving attention to that man who doesn’t want you. They will all be there when you get back. Take it easy x
